Parks and Rec

Winter Service Levels

by the numbers....

Sidewalks:

  • Approximately 28 miles of sidewalks cleared daily, if necessary
  • Staff starts at 4:30 and there are 16 Full Time Employees
  • Staff prioritized sidewalk clearing over Ice Rink maintenance when large storms occur or staffing is short.
  • Goal is to be done with sidewalk clearing by 10AM daily.
  • Staff prioritizes Town Core, Safe Routes to School and Bus Stops
    • Staff then moves to east Jackson, South and West Jackson as resources allow
    • Sidewalk additions for Winter 2022-2023 inlcude: Hansen sidewalk, Jackson Street, Willow, Pearl, Simpson and Rancher additions.

Shovel Facilties:

  • Staff clears entrances for safe egress for 25+ Town and County facilities, stairs around the Town core and emergency services.
  • On Weekends staff focuses priorities on Sheriff, Police Department, Courthouse, Emergency Services, Fire Admin and Library.

Pathways:

  • Nearly 77 miles of pathways in Teton County, Parks Department clears approximately 23 miles of paths
    • New addition from Game Creek to Munger was added through contractor for the current winter.
    • Staff may have to abandon certain areas due to proximity to road and snow loads..Hwy 22 from Town to Emily’s Pond and South Park loop pathway from 3 Creek South entrance heading south/east to Hwy 89.  Option to request budget amendment to have contractor clear with blowers and/or larger equipment if too much snow.
      • Contractor work..Game to Munger; Hwy 22 from Town to west bank; Hwy 390 to Lake Creek and Wilson area pathways.
      • Staff clears everything else in house, including in Town pathway portions..Garaman, around TCSD and Blair area. 

Bus Stop:

  • Staff clears 30+ bus stops in Town to ensure safe access. 906 Route.
  • Department has 6 routes including START bus stops and internal pathways.
  • Staff prioritizes Town Core, Safe Routes to School and Bus Stops
    • Staff then moves to east Jackson, South and West Jackson as resources allow
    • Sidewalk additions for Winter 2022-2023 inlcude: Hansen sidewalk, Jackson Street, Willow, Pearl, Simpson and Rancher additions.

Grooming:

  • Staff has dedicated staff for grooming so it is not often affected by resources or large snow events. 
  • Grooming Grant $26,000-RTP State Trails received annually to subsidize the grooming program.
  • Approximately 27 miles of trails groomed in Teton County.

Ice Rinks:

  • Staff maintains 4 ice rinks..fairgrounds, Owen Bircher, Powderhorn and Alta (PT Staff)
  • Ice rinks are last in line from a priority perspective during large snow events or short staffing.
  • Goal is to have rinks maintained and open by noon daily.
